About the course
This course provides an overview of Expository writing with emphasis on composing different types of
professional documents. Out of the four skills of language, this course is focused on understanding the
genres of expository writing used for explanation, information, cause and effect, comparison & contrast,
persuasion and research-based review. The students will be given an exposure to different types of the
audience to compose their draft for an improved comprehension. The three stages of the writing process
will be explained in detail with pertinent examples of drafting a persuasive thesis statement and the
consequent paragraphs which are coherent and based on authentic citations. The traits of technical
writing alongside the detailed explanation of different types of professional documents will help students
learn the audiovisual representation of data in the form of graphs, diagrams, maps and tables. The
students will also learn to report their data in the form of face-to-face and online presentations. Lastly,
the course inculcates academic integrity among learners by elaborating on different referencing and citation
systems to avoid plagiarism.

Course Learning Objectives
This course will guide the students to identify and describe a subject matter, to analyze it in detail, and propose a set of solutions in the appropriate format of expository writing that is comprehensible for the target readers. Additionally, the learners will develop the correct research practices based on selecting and evaluating pertinent research works and sources, and effectively integrate and cite these references to retain academic integrity in the university and the workplace. Students are expected to give and explain their own perspectives logically, and critically respond to the professional documents written by other writers. Specific objectives are as follows:
- To develop an understanding of writing procedures and formatting in professional correspondence. ? To help the students learn how to organize the information in the different formats of expository writing.
- To make the students cognizant of the different types of professional documents, the application of visual aids to enhance the effectiveness of these professional documents and the ethical practices of documenting and making a detailed bibliography.
- Apart from that it is aimed at enhancing the presentation skills and giving students sufficient practice and confidence to help them in their practical career ahead.

After successfully completing the course, the students will be able to:

- Analyze in detail samples and examples of different types of essays and professional documents to
- adapt the proper procedures and techniques for expository writing. (C4-PLO12)
- Internalize and practice different formats of academic and professional documents.
